As far back as I can remember, I’ve always been way too worried about what other people think of me. Looking back to a young age, I was not the most confident kid. In fact I was painfully shy and super sensitive. It didn’t take much to hurt my feelings. And like all kids, I just wanted to be liked and feel part of the group.

But I never was…

I went to a very small all girl high school and my classmates were brutal. It seemed that every time I spoke up for myself or dared to defend someone else, or had a different opinion, I was bullied, made fun of and talked about behind my back. I Iearned early on that being different from them was not going to work. So I decided that the only way I would survive the next four years would be to keep a low profile and just do my best to “fit in”.

I didn’t know it then, but now I realize that was the exact moment I started tiptoeing through life. I decided to keep my mouth shut and pretty much agreed with everyone and everything even when I didn’t, just to be liked and accepted_ leaving me feeling unhappy, unfulfilled and uncomfortable in my own skin.
So why is it we care so darn much about the opinion of others, even the people we don’t like or admire_ doing or not doing things because of how we expect others to react? And yes, it’s human nature to want to be liked and to seek approval, but when our sensitivity is to the point where we don’t take a stand or speak up, fearing alienation, or the insults of others, we risk losing ourselves in the process.

I know I did.

The truth is that no matter how you live your life, there will always be situations that you will not fit into and people you do not fit in with. And I’m sorry to break the news, but there are always going to be those people who have nothing better to do with their time than to tear others down with their gossip and hateful comments. But we need to remind ourselves that the negative comments someone makes is about them not you and… THEY ARE NOT YOUR PEOPLE!

Repeat after me…. They are NOT my people… screw what they think!

When we are finally able to put things in perspective and realize that we only get this one life, it makes it much easier to stop caring so much about what other people think and be true to OURSELVES. There are no do-overs folks.
Start by listening to your own heart… you actually know what you are doing!
Purge your life of toxic people. If the people around you have a knack for drama… avoid them. If your friends have a tendency to tear you down instead of pouring love and support into you…. look elsewhere! If you have a more public life that requires a presence on social media, for the love of GOD stop reading the ridiculous comments people make about you.

Do what you need to do to protect your sensitive heart. After all, you are entitled to self love, and your feelings are not bullet proof.

There’s so much freedom in letting go of the concern of others. No matter how hard you try, you can’t stop people from being hateful, but you can choose to ignore them and do something more meaningful with your life. Start by only spending time with the people you know have your best interest at heart.

Stop wasting your time trying to get everyone to like you…trust me, it’s impossible!

Instead focus on being the best version of yourself, spend your time using your talents, gifts, and abilities to make the world and people around you better.

Let other people like you not because of who you’re trying to be, but because of who you genuinely are, or as I am learning…

I’d rather be hated for who I truly am than loved for someone I’m pretending to be!
