Best Workout: Downdog Yoga, 1046 Potomac St. NW

Immediately upon entering Downdog Yoga studio, it becomes quite clear that this is no ordinary yoga studio. There is going to be sweat — and a lot of it. Less than halfway through the first series, it becomes apparent that this is no easy practice, either.

The combination of a heated studio and a dynamic — read: strenuous — approach to the three series of Baptiste Power Yoga lends itself to 90 minutes of intense, heart-pumping movement. This style of yoga is fast paced and sure to work up a sweat but the staff at Downdog takes great efforts to accommodate all levels of fitness and yoga experience.

The smell of incense is welcoming and the tranquil colors of the walls are reassuring during the most difficult portions of class. Not only does Downdog offer a challenging practice, but it remains true to the roots of the practice: the studio offers only one type of yoga in order to move toward its advancement and the facilities, though spacious, are without frills or extras.

The practice studio is quite large in comparison to those of other studios and is very able to accommodate the generally large class size.

Style: Baptiste Power Yoga

Levels: Newbies to Advanced

Special classes: Friday Afternoon Challenge

Cost per class: $12 with valid student ID
